Painting Pays and Pays and Pays

“Steady Eddie” franchises are businesses that are consistently IN DEMAND. They weather the ups and downs of the economy, the changes in the political landscape, the latest technological innovations and are unaffected by world events.  Conservative, risk averse investors LOVE these types of businesses!

Haven’t we all experienced what a difference a coat of paint can make? When I bought my condo, every surface was old-lady-pink.  The place was completely TRANSFORMED by two coats of off-white!

Data shows that homes get painted every four to seven years.  This means residential painting pays and pays and pays plus it adds to the value of real property.

Stay ahead of the SEGMENTATION that is happening in the painting industry by checking out this Franchise Alert.

Pay Attention To What Pays

There probably isn’t a more “boring” business for me to recommend to someone than a cleaning franchise - UNTIL - the would-be business owner understands these four things:

  1. The ROLE OF THE OWNER is to grow and manage the business, NOT CLEAN.

  2. There are REPEAT, LOYAL CUSTOMERS who require regular cleans of

  • Cars

  • Carpets

  • Swimming pools

  • Dogs

  • Clothes

  • Houses

  • Offices

  • Exteriors of buildings

  • Parking lots

  • Barbeque grills - yes, there really is a franchise for just about everything

  • Restaurant hoods

  • HVAC systems

  • Windows

  • AND SO ON……

3. CUSTOMERS PAY in cash or with credit cards IMMEDIATELY.

4. They are IMMUNE TO the ECONOMY, POLITICS, TECHNOLOGY, WORLD EVENTS, AND AMAZON.

These are part of our everyday lives, and customers gladly pay for these pretty affordable services.

Restoration Franchises Thrive In Any Economy!

During the Covid shutdowns, we learned which businesses thrived in a down economy and which are sensitive to economic cycle changes.

One industry that thrives in any economy is RESTORATION!  Why is this?

Basements flood, trees fall on roofs, fires, and hail damage, and mold grows regardless of

  • Who is in the White House

  • The latest technological innovation and

  • The state of the economy

The cost of restoration of the structure and its contents is typically covered by the homeowner’s or building owner’s insurance.

Thought About Vending?

Don’t we all have the memory of putting a coin in a bubble gum machine and getting a big pink hunk of sweet gum to chew in our little mouths? I remember the sweet sugary scent and biting down on the pink hunk until it gave way to the soft gum inside.

VENDING is a GREAT BUSINESS!  As a matter of fact, it is one of my all-time favorite businesses! Vending continues to grow and innovate in meeting consumer demand in many different industries.

Did you know?

  1. Vending is a $100 billion industry worldwide?

  2. Some vending machines are equipped with artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology, allowing personalized recommendations based on customer preferences.

  3. With the rise of cashless payment options and touchless technology, vending innovations are at the forefront of providing safe and seamless transactions.

  4. Vending machines are not limited to food and beverages; you can find them dispensing anything from bitcoin and other currency to electronics.

Real Estate-related Franchises Are IT!

Given the uncertainty of our economy and the largely out-of-favor stock market, real estate-related franchises are getting A LOT of attention now. I’m not talking about real estate brokerages for people wanting to be realtors. Shift gears and consider these three areas:

1. Businesses that focus on getting a property ready to sell or to rent. Consider junk removal services, estate sales to help people downsize, bathroom and kitchen renovations, moving services, storage units, and the typical home improvement services of painting, pressure washing, and cleaning.

2. An especially HOT, HOT, HOT category is for people looking for rental income. Look no further than shared or co-working space as well as salon suites and laundromats.

3. If you are looking to diversify your assets and have more wealth creation and cash flow from real estate investments, you may wish to consider daycare centers, schools, senior living communities, indoor aquatic centers (swimming schools), car washes, and automotive repair shops.

Small Business Isn’t SMALL

Yesterday we celebrated Small Business as a nation.  My message for you is this:

Small Business Isn’t SMALL!

It continues to be the backbone of our economy. This will not change. Entrepreneurship is an integral part of what makes America the greatest country on earth and in the history of the world.

People across the globe long to be here. Why?

For the opportunity and the freedom to

LIVE THE AMERICAN DREAM!

Where’s Franchising Growing Now?

A lot of growth in franchising is coming from personal services.

This is why I have a LOVE AFFAIR with PERSONAL SERVICES

  • In-demand services that can be economy proof

  • Affordable services to growing customer bases

  • Repeat, loyal customers paying with cash/credit card

This is how we live: dropping off our youngest at daycare, working out at the gym, having the dog washed/groomed, attending a soccer gamegetting a haircut, and shoving something else into our storage unit.

These services are woven into our daily routines!

Check out this Franchise Alert to learn about creating wealth and income from personal services franchises.

Here’s to your wealth,

Beauty + Business Skills = BIG BUCKS!!!

Aside from fast food, leading the growth in franchising is Personal Services.

This is a broad franchise category, and I’m shining the spotlight on the BEAUTY component. What makes someone able to CREATE WEALTH here is strong BUSINESS SKILLS.

The business owners HIRE THE TALENT who deliver the beauty services. Owners work “ON” the business, NOT “IN” IT.

Here is a blueprint for many beauty franchises from an INVESTOR PERSPECTIVE

  • Owner’s role: manage managers, limited time commitment

  • Strong business skills: ability to execute a business plan; build, motivate, and lead a team; manage the business by the numbers

  • Customers - repeat and loyal who pay in cash on the spot

  • Economic cycle impact: expect minimal, a.k.a. the “LIPSTICK” EFFECT.”  When budgets tighten, affordable luxuries like cosmetics, haircuts, and manicures are still purchased. Bigger ticket items like travel and eating out are what get cut.

  • Minimum financial qualifications: $100K liquid capital with a $350K Net Worth

  • PEOPLE WANT TO LOOK GOOD AND ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT!

Expect to be surprised about the financial strength of beauty. Learn more from this Franchise Alert.

Of course, there is the fortune spent on children’s clothes, toys, and athletic endeavors. I gladly paid every dollar spent just like most parents!

From your own experiences as a parent, you know the long list of services and products you have provided for your kids, from daycare to various sports activities and camps to schools and entertainment.

These fun kinds of businesses can be great franchise investments for people who want to

MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.

Innovative Automotive Franchises

People are worried about the economy so I’m focusing on franchises I call “steady eddies". That is,” dull, normal” businesses that do well regardless of what’s happening in the economy. This is a perfect time to focus on automotive franchises.

Do you know what is the average age of a vehicle in the U.S.?

It is 12.2 years old!!  For automotive businesses, that is MONEY IN THE BANK!

Ever since owning a car, I’ve used quick oil change shops, auto repair garages, car detailing services, auto parts stores, car rental businesses, towing services, and car washes. And so have you and millions of other vehicle owners.

Remember as the owner of an automotive franchise, your role is NOT to work on the vehicles. You hire the technicians who provide the automotive expertise.

You grow and manage the business.

With the amazing advances in technology, automotive franchises have made cost-effective operational efficiencies and employ savvy online marketing strategies that convert these “dull, normal” businesses into exciting and innovative ones. The proof is in the attractive ROIs.

Check out this Franchise Alert for an overview of Automotive Franchises, a staple of franchise opportunities.

Intriguing B2B franchises

Many people are surprised to learn that there are a lot of franchises that cater to businesses as opposed to consumers like you and me.

As many of you know, B2B stands for Business to Business. These franchises are businesses that have other businesses as their customers. This is in contrast to B2C franchises that have consumers as their customers.

People who love to network and build relationships in the business or healthcare communities make great B2B franchisees.

Businesses use vendors to provide a wide variety of services like staffing, computer support, janitorial, senior care, facility management, signage, and security systems.

People who come from pharmaceutical and medical device sales, IT software sales, commercial real estate, and other business development roles make ideal B2B franchisees.

To take a deeper dive into B2B franchises, check out this Franchise Alert.

Let's talk franchise resales!

Occasionally I have someone contact me who is interested in only an existing franchise business for sale. The person doesn’t want to launch a new business, grow it to the break-even point and build the book of business. Instead, he or she is willing to pay a premium for the cash flow of an existing franchise business.

In such cases, the buyer needs to be willing to pay a multiple for the cash flow after expenses or EBIDTA (earning before interest, depreciation, taxes, and amortization). Naturally, this is going to cost more than launching a new franchise brand in your local market.

For people who need to replace their income right away to become a business owner, a resale may be a good option. Finding the right franchise resale that matches with the buyer’s skills, interests and financial qualifications can be a challenge.

There are advantages and disadvantages to going with a resale versus a new franchise business. To learn more about franchise resales, check out this latest Franchise Alert.

If you are interested in a new or a resale franchise, you are welcome to book an appointment with me or visit our website.

Seasonal Franchises Are Great Retirement Businesses

When it comes to seasonal franchises, many people ASSUME they won’t make good money. They ASSUME they need to work year-round and live in a certain climate.

Let the facts BUST the fiction!

Let’s take a pool cleaning service. It’s counterintuitive BUT, the cold weather markets may be potentially more lucrative than if the business was in a more temperate climate.

How can this be?

Here’s the scoop: Severe winters close down outdoor services like roofing, painting, and pool cleaning. During the open season, these franchise owners can and do charge more than the ones in warmer markets.

What a sweet deal that can be for a cold market franchise owner: potentially make the same money and work less months!

Trade-off: Won’t workers want jobs that are year-round?

Solution: To learn more about seasonal franchises and the secret to finding workers for them, check out this Franchise Alert.

The Gray Tsunami Is Here!

Since beginning my career, I have heard about the graying of America. Now I’m a part of it.
This huge consumer group has many franchises catering to it. Did you know

  • 11,000 people a day turn 65 in America

  • 75 million Americans are over age sixty (60)

  • People who reached age 65 in 2019 are expected to live another 20 years

  • By 2040 (only 17 yrs away) over 20% of the US population will be aged 65+

Most older adults wish to remain in their homes and “age in place.” This creates a lot of business opportunity!

  • Regular cleaning, maintenance, and repair services are thriving.

  • Pet care services are increasing for sitting, walking, grooming, pet waste removal, doggie daycare, and all things pets.

  • Helping older folks downsize are moving companies, estate sales, and junk removal services.

  • Providing in-home skilled and non-skilled care continues to have unmet demand.

Check out this Franchise Alert to learn about more potentially lucrative businesses in this space.

There’s nothing HOTTER than Pet Franchises

The statistics on the pet industry are staggering. It’s about a $100 Billion/year industry with continued compound annual growth of over 5% moving forward after the surge during Covid.

For research, I visited a franchise founder, Don, last week. To quote him, “I can really geek out on technology.” His genius is applying SOPHISTICATED technology to dog washing and grooming services! REALLY!

QUESTION: Since the dogs are hand washed and groomed by the employees, how is this service technology-driven?

ANSWER: Software automatically assigns employees to each dog (customer) by 2 things:

  • The speed of employees at each station in the process AND

  • By breed of dog.

So, if Sally is faster washing a beagle, like my Annie pictured below,  than Joe, Mary, or Steve, she is assigned by the software to wash Annie. If Joe is faster at drying beagles than the other employees, he does the drying. The same employee assignment occurs automatically by the software for the nail trimming and grooming stations.

It's brilliant, and it's fascinating, and it can be lucrative!

I had to see it in person to understand how magnificently smooth it works for the

The employees

The dogs and

The pet parents

What Franchises Can Be A Side Hustle?

Like a stormy March, side hustle franchises are coming in like a lion! The best ones are making a big roar and remain in high demand from savvy investors.

What is a side hustle franchise?

It’s where the business model is built on a General Manager (GM) running daily operations.  This is very different from the majority of franchises which are owner/operator business models.

There are relatively few franchises that provide for the owner to have less than a full-time commitment. These are called manage-the-manager, semi-absentee, or part-time franchises.

By definition, these franchises involve awarding multiple units or territories from the start. People looking to scale to a sizable business make great candidates.

Check out this Franchise Alert on Side Hustles.

Today’s Theme For 2023 - Home Services

You will notice a recurring theme for HOT franchises in 2023.  There are two categories you can expect to hear a lot about - Personal Services and Home Services.

Today we focus on Home Services. These include businesses that cater to mid to upper-income homeowners.

Why are these businesses BOOMING?

There are multiple macroeconomic factors creating long-term opportunities for home services.

  1. The supply of residential real estate is limited.

  2. The cost of home ownership continues to increase from tight supply and higher mortgage rates.

  3. The remote and hybrid work environments, i.e., more people are working at home.

Bottom Line: People are continuing to fix up and stay put for the foreseeable future.

You may be thinking, “I don’t know anything about construction.” No problem: That kind of experience is NOT required. Owners hire employees or subcontractors to perform the work.

Many home service franchises offer the attractive Manage-The-Manager Business Model. A General Manager (GM) handles the daily operations. The role of the owner is executive management. There are opportunities to have home service franchises as “a side hustle.”

Required skills: People management, business acumen, team leadership

HOT HOME SERVICES: painting; outdoor lighting; flooring; handyman services; cosmetic renovation for quick real estate sales; and on and on…….
